Good - but his older works are better Jul 22, 2010 Ornish's book on Reversing Heart Disease is the background for this book. It helps if you have read that one. His book on Everyday Cooking has a lot more recipes. However, "The Spectrum" is a good book, especially for the person who will not take the time to read his more comprehensive works.
An added dimension Jun 24, 2010 This book is similar to other books with respect to exercise and diet. But what makes this book special is it adds simple to do and understand meditation techniques. The added value of meditation is a phenomenon that you should include in your life. Especially from a stress management point of view. The DVD included with the book is very helpful. It shows how to meditate.
Not What I Ex"Spected"----"Eat to Live" is still #1 Jun 24, 2010 Although "The Spectrum" does offer sound dietary advice unlike the dangerous & gimmicky fad diets of the past 10 years (Atkins, Zone, Meditteranean, Blood Type, etc.), it contained very little up-to-date dietary information that I was hoping for. Only 20% of this book directly discusses nutrition (with about 12 pages of charts showing what foods are in the good and bad ends of the "spectrum"). It seemed intentionally vague when it comes to helping you decide what to eat, in an attepmt to give the reader the feeling of "power of choice". "The Spectrum" tries to cover too many topics I found either un-important or un-intersting. About 50% of the book deals with the emotions, stress, science, meditation, love, etc., and is written in a manner much too "soft/gentle" for my taste. The remaining 30% (last two chapters) contains fairly involved recipes & cooking techniques, many of which seem way too time intesive for my busy life. The scientific studies backing Dr. Ornish's advise seems legit (regarding genetics & reversal of heart disease), and I respect what he has been trying to accomplish during his career.
I read "Eat to Live" (2003 by Dr. Joel Fuhrman) a few years back. It is a much better book in my opinion, and the best diet/nutrtion book I have read to date. It is based on very similar principles (although is more restrictive, especially with fish). It's information is presented in a more concise & useful manner, with a direct, no-nonsense approach (which I prefer and find more motivating). The simple concept of "nutrient density" just clicked with me. I have incorporated most of the principles of that book into my diet for the past few years with great results, and I often refer back to it every now and again. I guess I was hoping for something new and "fresh" to re-inspire me, but "The Spectrum" did not deliver.

Excellent book, good advise, proven health plan May 24, 2010 I first became aware of Dr. Dean Ornish when I read his book "Eat More Weight Less". It has been many years since that time and although I believed it was a good, informative book, I was not ready to follow his suggestions. I've since received a diagnosis of calcification of the arteries and was prescribed statin drugs. I did not like the side effects and decided to look for alternatives. I was directed back to Dr. Ornish by another doctor and I bought this book and I am seriously following his advise.
The book is well organized, his writing is clear and he cites credible scientific studies to back his claims. In the book he explains why it's important to follow his diet and nutrition program and he explains how to do it. There are lots of explanations and detailed charts of the various foods and nutrients that should be eaten to promote good health and reverse heart disease.
His program has worked very well for me so far. I've dropped a few pounds although that was not my main goal because my weight was under control (my BMI is now 21.5). However, my body really feels much better in many respects. My IBS is practically gone. Muscular weakness as well as aches and pains I was suffering, are a thing of the past. I look forward with anticipation at the results of my next blood tests. I am confident that I will improve just as many others have done.
If you are looking for a guide to good health and a more enjoyable life, this is it!
