What you need to know about the sweets Jan 15, 2007
By Mark Radulich
"Political Shrink"
For probably all of my adult life or at least since college, I have been enamored with green tea. I drank generous amounts bottled ice teas any time I ventured into a convenience store. Arizona was my brand because they were the ones offering a veritable cornucopia of iced tea products from the sweet and well-known fruit teas (my favorite was peach) to the more exotic teas that I had never heard of such as black tea. When I tried their green tea, I was hooked. Later on as I jumped on the no-carb bandwagon and became searching for zero calorie drinks, they satisfied this junkies cravings with what would become my lifeblood for many years to come, diet green tea.
Each bottle of diet green had a peculiar label on it that I never paid much attention to. The tag read in large friendly letters, "Made with Splenda." I figured with the FDA around it really didn't matter what the heck Splenda was, I felt confident that if it was in my diet green tea, then it had to be good. Around this time I noticed copious amounts of the individual sweetener packets in my mothers kitchen where the sugar and the Sweet N Low used to be. My mother and all of the other yenta's that frequented our abode would rave about the wonders of Splenda over any number of pastries or bagels. My mother to this day sings its praises as a dietary wonder product.
What fools we have been! According to osteopathic physician and surgeon, Dr. Joseph Mercola and Naturopathic Medical Doctor Kendra Degen Pearsall, authors of the new book, "Sweet Deception: Why Splenda, NutraSweet, and the FDA May Be Hazardous to Your Health," Splenda is about as safe as ingesting DDT (no, not Jake Roberts wrestling finisher, the poisonous pesticide). As a matter of fact, Splenda and DDT are chemically speaking, remarkably similar according to the above authors. When I think about the gallons and gallons of diet green tea and other beverages containing Splenda I have consumed, I get a little more than queasy.
The good doctors have written a book that blows the lid on the real affects and history of sugar abuse, artificial sweeteners and just how corrupted the Food and Drug Administration have become. Because "Sweet Deception" is a comprehensive review of the sugar industry as well as a critique of the FDA, it is an indispensable tool for those who are trying in the face of insurmountable odds to better their health and maintain a healthy diet. At the very least, it provides good source material for people to check out and compare their diet against. After all, if you don't know what's in the food you are eating, then you can't combat against it.
The first chapter deals exclusively with sugar. Sugar has a storied life and is partially responsible for some of the more negative aspects of human history such as environmental degradation of the Everglades and slavery in the Colonial Era. But beyond being a dubious resource it is also a major factor in our collective health. Sugar in it's most basic definition is that with which something becomes sweet. Sweet is a signal to our brains that whatever we are consuming is good and won't poison us, as opposed to something that tastes sour or bitter. Sugar also satisfies our appetites more quickly than say another type of element like salt. Mercola and Pearsall explain in great detail what an appropriate amount of sugar intake should be and what happens when we overdose on sugar (like we currently are). In addition, the authors cover all of the additives in foods that are either derived from sugar or are meant to replace sugar such as High Fructose Corn Syrup. HFCS is almost all of the drinks we consume as well as other products and as other authors such as Michael Pollan (The Omnivore's Dilemma) have tried to warn the reading populace, is absolutely no good for you.
The next few chapters deal with the rise of artificial sweeteners such as saccharin, aspartame (which is in another one of the drinks I have made a part of my daily routine) and sucralose aka Splenda. Mercola and Pearsall explain the context of what gave rise to the artificial sweetener industry as well as what chemicals play a role in creating said products. What the authors reveal in these chapters is both horrifying and maddening all in the same verse. Not only are the artificial sweeteners mostly cancerous, but they also had the tacit approval of the federal government.
If the book were only about sugar and artificial sweeteners then it would have only been about 100 pages long. However, where health and diet is concerned, what you eat is only part of the conversation. As I stated at the onset of this review, I, like many of my fellow consumers, assumed that if the product made it to the shelves in my local supermarket, then it must be safe for me to place on the menu. However, Mercola and Pearsall explain in the next several chapters that the FDA is just as subject to lobby money and corruption and as another institution run by man.
Basically, what the authors show us is that on paper every food product needs to be demonstrated as safe before the FDA will approve. So the BIG corporations pay their own team of scientists to perform studies and tests and then their bosses either bury or scuttle the evidence, thus watering down or completely changing the stated outcomes of said study. When this information is presented to the FDA, it looks as if it was a perfectly good study and thus gets its approval to wait on the shelves for its chance to give us all cancer. Donald Rumsfeld makes an appearance in this section of the book. Not only is he responsible for the failed military post-war strategy in Iraq but also he's also responsible for bringing us NutraSweet, which causes brain tumors and cancer.
I am not the health nut that reading this book might make you think I am. My diet leaves much to be desired but where I can get information I try to and this book really opened up my eyes to what exactly I have been doing to myself by drinking products containing Splenda as well as other artificial sweeteners. If you value your health and are interested in making significant changes to your diet or even if you are just sick of going to doctors, you should read, "Sweet Deception," by Dr. Joseph Mercola and Dr. Kendra Degen Pearsall.

The dangers of artificial sweeteners Jun 24, 2007
By Steve Burns If you are looking for a book that will educate you on the dangers of Sweet and Low, NutraSweet , and Splenda look no further, this book lays out all known and proven dangers for these sweeteners. The reason they are free of all calories in there pure form is that they are not carbohydrates or food at all, they are chemicals. There chemical names are saccharine, aspartame, and sucralose. They are made through chemistry by binding molecules to create new chemicals. NutraSweet is 50% phenylalanine, 40% aspartic acid, and 10% wood alcohol (which your body metabolizes as formaldehyde). Splenda is made from chemically altering the sucrose molecule by chlorinating it which changes the molecule from a fructo-glucose molecule into a fructo-galactose molecule and puts it the insecticide family of organochlorines. Splenda is the only organochlorine that is consumed, it was discovered in a lab during an experiment with new insecticides. It is in the same chemical class as DDT and PCBs. The author contends that the FDA approves these harmful chemicals for general use due to its conflicts of interest with the food industry. The author recommends eating a diet of as much whole foods as possible and avoiding artificial sweeteners and sugar. Stevia was recommended as a natural sweetener. I have been using stevia for years and love it. This book is packed with easy to understand information that will change your eating habits. I highly recommend.

I WAS A TYPICAL DIET COKE JUNKIE UNTIL I READ THIS! Jan 08, 2007
By Katherine Jennings If you are someone who puts artificial sweetener in your coffee or tea, drinks diet soda, chews gum, eats anything 'sugar free' or 'no sugar added' or any other type of low calorie food WHATSOEVER, then you need to do yourself a huge favor read this book. It is an excellent whistle blowing tell-all about the real relationships of the FDA, the food manufacturers (that make the garbage the we are ingesting), the lobbyists that represent them and what these horrible TOXINS called artificial sweeteners are doing to us physically and mentally. I read this book in a 24 hour period because I could not put it down!! This book gives real meaning to the term 'truth is stranger than fiction'. I am probably the typical American consumer, having a morning cup of coffee with Splenda, a diet coke (or two) at lunch, then maybe a low calorie desert on occassion. I am not overweight, in fact I am at my 'ideal' weight, yet I suffer from exhaustion, depression, anxiety, muscle spasms, headaches, you name it. So what is it that is making me feel this way?? It is the 'poison' that I have been ingesting for YEARS because, like you, I was told it was 'safe' by the very people who approved its safety (the FDA) and the people who manufacture it. Do yourself and your loved ones a favor, get this book, read it, and pass it on to someone you love!!

Big Sugar & It's Industrial Users Finally Get Busted Big Time! Nov 15, 2006
By R. Bianchi Folks, what the sweetener industry does not want you to know is they are shortening YOUR life, at their PROFIT, with BAD FOR YOU sweeteners that are NOT "all natural" like cane and beet sugar, high fructose corn syrup, alcohol distilled sweetners (polyols, that cause dirreaha and CANCER) and the latest chemical nail in YOUR coffin branded SPLENDA (sucralose) which is highly TOXIC and not 'just like sugar' as claimed, it's POISON!
Drs. Joe Mercola and Kendra Pearsall prove, beyond a shadow of a doubt, how utterly corrupt and criminal the FDA approval process is for Big Sugar, and in this case, Tate and Lyle, which dates back to the slaves to grow sugar to make molasses and rum to buy more slaves EVIL triangle, of the first 4 centuries in New World empire building, on the blood of fellow humans, and is still thriving.
Folks, little has change in reality, the large sweetener producers of the globe, in bed with bribed (or what is now called "lobbying")governments, are still exploiting your health, and taking your money, for their profits.
Medically and health-wise speaking, you do not need to consume ANY of these horrifically bad for you products. Just Say NO!!! Improve your health and keep YOUR hard earned money.
Sweet Deception is a landmark book that should be read by every friend and family member you care about and/or love.
I can think of no better stocking stuffer, birthday gift, anniversary gift, special occasion gift, or no reason at all gift, than this wonderful, factual, and superbly documented book!!! This is 2006's answer to Upton Sinclair's 'The Jungle'.
Remember, the FDA is NOT looking out for you at ALL, and this book demonstrates the overwhelming evidence to support that assertion.
Mercola and Pearsall should be nominated for the Nobel Prize in Medicine
for this very serious contribution to the long term health and well being of all humans globally.
Amazon.com goes only to a five star rating system, whereas 'Sweet Deception' is at least seven stars, with a silver bullet, and should be made into a movie...!!!!
How do I know this book is so accurate? I work in the food, beverage and pharmaceutical business, and I'm telling you this book tells it like it really is.

CORRUPTION and LIES at the FDA and sweetener companies! Nov 27, 2006
By CQ DX This well researched and written book is a MUST READ, given how prevalent artificial sweeteners have become. I could not put the book down, given it's alarming 'jaw dropping' facts and implications. The outright LIES, CORRUPTION, and MISREPRESENTATIONS many of these artificial sweetener companies and the FDA have been involved in regarding the side-effects and/or safety of these products is appalling, unethical, and downright scary! Americans should be outraged that the FDA has been 'bought and sold' by big Pharma, and has changed for the worse. Talk about major 'conflict of interests'! You owe it to yourself, and your friends and family, to read this book, get the REAL facts, and judge for yourself if you want to continue imbibing artificial chemical sweeteners like Saccharin, Aspartame (NutraSweet), or Sucralose (Splenda), whose safety is questionable, given the FDA's unethical 'selling out'. THANK YOU Dr. Mercola! I hope this is available in paperback as well soon, so that more people may read it and educate themselves.
