What is Berberine?

Berberine sulfate is an alkaloid extracted from the roots and bark of various plants and possesses antibacterial, antifungal, and antiprotozoal activities. Most studies have focused on the bacteriostatic or bactericidal activities of this compound. In this study, we report that berberine sulfate is bacteriostatic for streptococci and that sub-MICs of berberine blocked the adherence of streptococci to host cells, immobilized fibronectin, and hexadecane. Concentrations of berberine below its MIC caused an eightfold increase in release of lipoteichoic acid from the streptococci. Higher concentrations of berberine directly interfered  with the adherence of streptococci to host cells either by preventing the complexing of lipoteichoic acid with fibronectin or by dissolution of such complexes once they were formed. Thus, berberine sulfate interferes with the adherence of group A streptococci by two distinct mechanisms: one by releasing the adhesin lipoteichoic acid from the streptococcal cell surface and another by directly preventing or dissolving lipoteichoic acid-fibronectin complexes.

1. Berberine and Diabetes:
   A collaboration between Chinese, Australian and Korean scientists at Sydney's Garvan Institute indicates berberine may be helpful. They stated "Our studies in animal models of diabetes show that berberine acts in part by activating an enzyme in the muscle and liver that is involved in improving sensitivity of the tissue to insulin. This in turn helps lower blood sugar levels. In addition, it seems berberine can help reduce body weight". "Berberine has been used for decades, if not centuries, with few reported side effects.    Berberine and Blood Sugar and Cholesterol,
   It seems that Berberine may be helpful in maintaining healthy blood sugar and cholesterol levels in those with type 2 diabetes according to Dr. Guang Ning, of the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in Shanghai.  He and his colleagues gave 116 diabetes patients either one gram of berberine daily or a placebo for 3 months.  Here is a summary of their results: average hemoglobin A1C -- a measure of long-term blood sugar control -- dropped from 7.5 percent to 6.6 percent in those taking berberine supplements. Their patients taking berberine also showed significant reductions in total and "bad" LDL cholesterol levels.    Berberine and Blood Pressure and Weight Loss:

   In the same diabetes study that Dr. Guang Ning (from the Shanghai Jiao Tong University School of Medicine in Shanghai) performed on 116 patients, they also found blood pressure fell in their patients taking berberine. In terms of weight loss, their patients on berberine lost 2.3 kilograms (5.1 pounds), on average, compared to 1.3 kilograms (2.9 pounds) for the placebo group. They also noted that some patients had to take less if they experienced a side effect causing constipation (2 of their 116 patients experienced this side effect and lowered their dosage.    Berberine and Bacteria:

   This abstract contains information on the antimicrobial activity of Berberine: “Antimicrobial activity of berberine alone and in combination with ampicillin or oxacillin against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus.”  Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) bacteria have been responsible for substantial morbidity and mortality in hospitals because they usually have multidrug resistance. Some natural products are candidates as new antibiotic substances. In the present study, we investigated the antimicrobial activity of berberine, the main antibacterial substance of Coptidis rhizoma (Coptis chinensis Franch) and Phellodendri cortex (Phellodendron amurense Ruprecht), against clinical isolates of MRSA, and the effects of berberine on the adhesion to MRSA and intracellular invasion into human gingival fibroblasts (HGFs). Berberine showed antimicrobial activity against all tested strains of MRSA. These results suggest that berberine may have antimicrobial activity and the potential to restore the effectiveness of beta-lactam antibiotics against MRSA, and inhibit the MRSA adhesion and intracellular invasion in HGFs.
