High Quality and Effective Dec 30, 2009

I've used this product and feel like I have had good results from it. Dr. Mercola has a lot of good information on his site about B12. One of the most notable facts is that most people absorb a fraction of one percent of other forms of oral B12.
Since I originally wrote this review, I've learned about the difference between cyanocobalamin and hydroxycobalamin. While both of these are forms of B12, hydroxycobalamin costs thousands more per kilo and is more useful to the body in a number of ways. For example, hydroxycobalamin is a cyanide antagonist and can repair vision loss caused by tobacco smoking (tobacco amblyopia) while the cheaper form of B12, cyanocobalamin, has no effect. This product uses cyanocobalamin. I wrote to Mercola.com to ask why. They responded thusly: "The cyanocobalamin form of B-12 easily crystallizes and is not sensitive to air-oxidation. This makes it the ideal form to use in a B12 Nanospray. It is also found in many supplements and multivitamins. Our Multivitamin Plus does use the methylcobalamin form. Research has demonstrated oral cyanocobalamin is safe. It is easily and rapidly converted to both methylcobalamin and adenosylcobalamin during absorption. At the target cell it reverses B12 deficiency and symptoms."
The research I quote on tobacco seems to offer a contradictory opinion. Orthomolecular physician Greg Kunin, who designed the Ola Loa supplements Amazon sells, has even stronger opinions on the difference between these two substances, claiming that "the cyano form of vitamin B12 interferes with your body's methylation pathway."
So, there you have my reasoning for lowering my rating of this product from four to three stars. I've since switched to a different oral spray, also sold on Amazon, that uses methylcobalamin. I also use Dr. Kunin's products, as well as other products from Dr. Mercola.

By Claire All items have a moldy smell and taste. Big complication getting them in the first place. Find a different avenue...
